On paper week 2 seemed rather ordinary, but on the field it was anything but with 3 ranked teams falling to unranked opponents. The day began with (17)SMU losing to Baylor in a double overtime thriller and later (13)Florida fell to South Florida. The South Florida bulls have been one of college football’s biggest surprises this season with 2 straight wins against top 25 opponents to begin their season. (12)Arizona State was the final ranked team to stumble this week when Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen tossed a 58 yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds left. In the marquee game of the week (18)Oklahoma and quarterback John Mateer outlasted (15)Michigan for a 24-13 win in the only matchup of two ranked teams this week. (16)Iowa State was given all they could handle in a 16-13 win for the “Cy-Hawk” trophy against Iowa. Top ranked teams like (3)LSU, (4)Georgia and especially (8)Clemson all failed to cover the spread in wins against inferior opponents. Dabo Swinney’s squad was actually losing at halftime to Troy 16-3, but a 24-0 response in the second half was enough for the tigers to avoid serious embarrassment.
